Yellow Akoso Bead
A medium-sized and well formed “Akoso” bead (also spelt “Akosu”). Yellow with the desirable crossed U-shaped decoration in pink and pale blue. The pink is obviously from Venetian white hearts but the blue is more unusual and from an uncertain source.
Akoso beads were indigenously made in West Africa around the late 19th or early 20th century, thought to have been made specifically for royalty and correspondingly rare in comparison to the more numerous Venetian trade beads.
Note condition: weathering throughout, losses to decoration (see photos).
Approximate dimensions: 24mm long x 17mm diameter.
